Brush your teeth properly:

The way you brush is fundamental – in fact, lousy brushing is equivalent to no brushing. Use soft bristles toothbrush to brush the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth in a gentle, small circular motion to remove plaque and avoid cavities and bleeding.  Lastly, gently clean your tongue to remove bacteria to prevent bad breath.

It is advisable to brush your teeth at least twice a day to prevent acid build-up by bacteria. However, even if you are not able to do it but ensure to rinse your mouth with water thoroughly after every meal. It can help prevent decay and gum problems. Flossing helps you to remove food particles and other detrimental substances from between the teeth that brushing is unable to do. It prevents bad breath and removes plaque and bacteria between the teeth.

While toothpicks help but it doesn’t do the job of a floss. Even though flossing can be difficult for older adults with arthritis or other problems, do not give up and look for ready-to-use dental flossers. The critical point is not to neglect this important part of oral hygiene and floss at least once a day.

Eat healthy nutritious food

What you put in your mouth affects your health as well as gums and teeth. Eat fresh and crunchy food that is nutritious and fibrous. Drink milk, juices, and eat yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products that contain calcium essential for your teeth and bones. When the bacteria in your mouth breakdown the sugars, they produce acids that can erode the tooth enamel, giving way to decay. Sugary drinks and other beverages have a high level of phosphorus. It is a necessary mineral for dental health, but in excess can deplete calcium level in the body, raising acid levels over time. At the same time, additives added to the beverages can make the teeth dull and discolor.

WHO recommends limiting the intake of sugar to below 10 percent of daily calories. Avoid starchy foods like bread, pasta or chips and instead eat fiber-rich fruits and vegetables.

The ADA recommends unsweetened tea throughout the day and drinking water that keeps you hydrated. It suggests drinking sugary drinks with meals in small volumes only.

Do not smoke

Smoking can lead to gum disease and can also slow down the healing after a dental procedure. It leads to bad breath and yellowing of teeth affecting the appearance of the mouth. Smoking is injurious to dental and overall health.

Use Fluoride

For 75 years, people in America drink fluoridated water for dental health and strong teeth. They also use fluoridated toothpaste, mouthwashes that help prevent cavities and strengthen enamel lowering chances of decay. Several organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and ADA are in favor of this practice.

Many evidence suggests that even if a person takes care of teeth, with a lack of fluoride can lead to tooth decay. So, use enough fluoride for your oral health.

Fluoride should be used in a small quantity for young kids, not more than a pea-sized on the toothbrush. If used in excess, it can cause white spots on the teeth.

Visit the dentist regularly

Experts recommend a dentist visit every 6 months for an oral check-up and teeth cleaning. Your dentist will help you identify the early signs of any dental problems that you may not be able to do on your own.
